3 Days Akagera Big Five Safari

The 3 Days Akagera Big Five Safari provides an extended exploration of Rwanda’s principal savannah national park. Located along the country’s eastern border, Akagera National Park protects a remarkably varied landscape of open grassland, woodland, rolling hills, lakes and extensive wetlands.

Akagera supports elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and rhinos as well as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Although the park contains the Big Five, all wildlife moves freely and sightings of every individual species cannot be guaranteed on any particular safari.

Day 1: Kigali – Transfer to Akagera National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Meet your professional Kiguba Adventure Safaris guide after breakfast and begin travelling east from Kigali towards Akagera National Park.

The journey takes you through Rwanda’s countryside as densely settled hills gradually give way to the warmer and more open landscapes of the eastern region.

After completing the necessary park entry procedures, begin your first game drive. Search the savannah for giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, impalas, topis, waterbucks and other wildlife.

Your guide will explore productive habitats while watching for recent wildlife signs. Lions, leopards and rhinos are present within the ecosystem, although encounters depend on natural animal movement.

Continue towards your accommodation later in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening surrounded by the landscapes of Akagera.

Accommodation: Budget – selected budget accommodation near Akagera or similar; Mid-range – Akagera Game Lodge or similar; Luxury – Ruzizi Tented Lodge or similar.

Day 2: Full-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari

Begin early with breakfast before setting out for a full day of Akagera wildlife viewing.

The extended game drive allows you to explore a greater portion of the park than is possible during a short excursion. Move between open plains, wooded areas and wetland habitats while searching for both large mammals and smaller wildlife.

Giraffes may be seen browsing above the vegetation, while zebras and antelopes occupy open grasslands. Elephants and buffaloes may appear in different habitats according to water availability and seasonal conditions.

Your guide will also search suitable areas for predators and rhinos. Because wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, the full-day format provides more time to explore different habitats and respond to information about animal movements.

Akagera’s lakes and wetlands add another dimension to the experience. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit the waterways, while the park supports an impressive variety of birdlife.

After an extensive day of wildlife viewing and photography, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Budget – selected budget accommodation near Akagera or similar; Mid-range – Akagera Game Lodge or similar; Luxury – Ruzizi Tented Lodge or similar.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive – Return to Kigali

Wake early for another game drive, taking advantage of the cooler morning temperatures and changing wildlife activity.

Search for animals that may not have been encountered during the previous day while revisiting productive areas of the park. Every game drive develops differently as animals move naturally across the landscape.

After completing your final wildlife experience, leave Akagera National Park and begin the journey west towards Kigali.

Arrive in the city later in the day and transfer to your hotel, airport or another agreed location, completing your 3 Days Akagera Big Five Safari with Kiguba Adventure Safaris.
