The 2 Days Nyungwe Chimpanzee and Canopy Walk Tour combines two of Rwanda’s outstanding rainforest experiences within a compact itinerary. Travel into the mountainous southwest to explore Nyungwe National Park, a remarkable forest ecosystem known for its primates, birdlife, walking trails and dramatic canopy.

The journey includes guided chimpanzee trekking beneath the forest canopy and a canopy walk that provides a completely different perspective from high above the forest floor. It is particularly suitable for travellers interested in primates, nature, photography and Rwanda’s landscapes beyond the better-known mountain gorilla region.

Day 1: Kigali – Transfer to Nyungwe National Park – Canopy Walk

Meet your professional Kiguba Adventure Safaris guide in Kigali after breakfast and begin travelling southwest towards Nyungwe National Park. The journey introduces you to Rwanda’s rolling countryside as you pass through towns, cultivated hills and rural communities.

As you approach Nyungwe, the scenery becomes increasingly mountainous and forested. The dense vegetation signals your arrival in one of Rwanda’s most important natural environments.

After arrival and depending on the confirmed starting time, prepare for the Nyungwe canopy walk. Join a professional guide and follow a forest trail towards the suspended walkway.

The experience takes you above sections of the rainforest, providing elevated views across the forest canopy and surrounding mountains. From this perspective, appreciate the enormous scale and layered vegetation of Nyungwe while watching for birds and primates that may be active in the surrounding trees.

After completing the walk, return from the forest and proceed to your lodge. Enjoy dinner and prepare for the following morning’s early chimpanzee trekking experience.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe – Return to Kigali

Wake early and transfer to the designated starting point for your chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park.

Meet professional guides and trackers for a briefing before entering the forest. The exact trekking route depends on recent chimpanzee movements, and the experience may involve walking through uneven and sometimes steep forest terrain.

Trackers listen for calls and follow signs of chimpanzee activity while guiding you through the rainforest. Nyungwe also supports several other primate species, and additional forest wildlife may be encountered naturally during the trek.

Once chimpanzees are located, observe them according to current park regulations as they move through the canopy, feed, rest or interact.

After completing the trek, return to meet your driver-guide and begin the journey back towards Kigali. Stop for lunch and appropriate comfort breaks along the route before arriving in the city later in the day.
